So my expectations for this version were not high
Plot
Seventeen-year-old Maja marries Janne, a fisherman, against her will. Her life on Stormskäret is full of challenges and setbacks. As a fisherman’s wife, she has to take care of herself and the family when her husband is at sea. The TV series about this story came out in 1975 and was a masterpiece.
How wrong I was!
A modern Maja for our time, they said. Maybe they’ll change the whole story? One part of the film in the middle could perhaps have been shortened a bit, but otherwise the film was perfect. Maja was very different here than she was 49 years ago.
She was also more playful
She was stronger and happier and had a better sense of humor. I don’t know what kind of woman the real Maja was (yes, there was a real Maja and a real Janne!), but I imagine she must have been a lot like this Maja. The actors playing Maja and Janne were perfect. Some key scenes were very different in this version compared to the 1975 version, but they were no less moving.
They couldn’t have done that in 1975
One of the most moving episodes from the 1975 version was actually longer and more detailed here and left a bigger impression on me. Director Tiina Limi added details that were literally surprising, but they added to the beauty of the film. In one scene, I really wondered what on earth the director was thinking. That particular scene was one of the strongest in the entire film, so Limi knew what he was doing!
The budget probably wouldn’t have allowed it
All the scenes that were left out of this new version didn’t hurt the story in my opinion. The incidents that moved me the most in 1977, when I watched the series, were all in this version – different, but still very powerful.
